Featured Department - Haematology
The Haematology department at Middlemore Hospital are unique in that all six consultants are actively involved in clinical research. The Haematology team are dedicated to providing the best care for their patients and giving them the opportunity to participate in world-class clinical trial research right here in Counties Manukau. The team are very busy with a combination of commercial and grant-funded trials as well as their clinic responsibilities. In FY2020, the Haematology department received the most feasibilities for new trials and conducted the most trials. The Haematology consultant team is led by Dr Sharon Jackson, and the haematologists are Dr Samar Issa, Dr Rajeev Rajagopal, Dr James Liang, Dr Gordon Royle, and Dr Kirsty Marshall. The research interests of the team include blood cancers (such as leukaemia, lymphomas, and multiple myelomas), myeloproliferative neoplasms and bleeding and coagulation disorders. The patients seen by the Haematology team often have very limited funded treatment options and so by taking part in a clinical trial they are able to access novel therapies long before they become standard of care treatments. We are looking forward to working with the Haematology team in conducting a number of new exciting trials next year.
